Today I would like to share 5 tips that I find important and useful when it comes to starting a home-based career. No matter what niche you are in, or what kind of work you do from home, these tips are aimed at anyone starting a home-based career on their own.
Tip #1: Designate a private space for yourself
The very first thing you need to do is prepare a private space for yourself where you can work without distractions. This can be a separate room in your home, or even an office if you want to spend some money.
It’s important to work without distractions, especially if you’re just starting out. Distractions such as emails, pets, and the urge to check your Facebook wall can shift your focus to unimportant or irrelevant factors, resulting in the waste of valuable time.
If you don’t have a separate room to use, or spend the money on an office, you always just set out some space in the living room or even your bedroom when you start. As you grow and start earning more money, you’ll be able to spend some money to create a private space for yourself.
Make sure your family and friends know when you will be working, and don’t ask them to distract you while you are working.
Remember that working from home is still a job, you are just working for yourself instead of someone else, which means you have more responsibilities and tasks to take on.
Tip #2: Develop a range of successful disciplines
To be successful with a home-based career, you need a set of successful disciplines to help you stay focused to develop.
The four key disciplines to develop are a successful mindset, the ability to stay focused, a “need” for education and the ability to take action.
By developing these four disciplines, you will be able to help yourself stay focused, build your knowledge and skills, and you will be able to take action rather than delay.
Mindset: Train yourself to have a more successful mindset. Believe in yourself and believe in what you are doing. This way you will begin to think more successfully. Try to wipe out any doubt you might have about your home-based career, and start thinking in a positive way.
Focus: Teach yourself how to stay focused on your projects and get rid of the most common distractions around you as you work on your new career at home.
Education: Develop a need for knowledge and skills, and then start training yourself. This doesn’t mean enrolling in university for advanced courses, it just means keeping up to date and teaching yourself. For example, if you choose to do affiliate marketing from home, you need to find high quality eBooks and courses online to help you learn the skills you need to be a more successful affiliate marketer.
Action: This is probably the most important discipline to develop. Without taking action, you won’t be able to achieve anything. You create a hundred high quality eBook ideas that you want to sell, but without taking action and actually creating them, you won’t sell anything, so you won’t make any money. Teach yourself how to go from an idea to a product by taking action on your ideas – and pushing you to the end.
Tip #3: Start with a plan
You have a multi-billion dollar idea in your head, but without proper planning opportunities your idea will fail even before it begins.
It is true. Without proper planning, you won’t know where to start or how to start, and you’ll soon find yourself jumping from task to task and idea to idea without ever finishing what you started with.
That’s why it’s important to plan before you take action. Remember at Tip #2, one of the disciplines of a successful homeowner is to take action – you need to follow through. Take action by putting your idea on paper, making a thoroughly researched business plan and then executing the business plan to start creating your own career based on personal use.
If you’re not sure where or how to start, get a piece of paper and start writing down ideas. If you write them down, new ideas are sure to pop into your head. Start making your business plan as you write down your ideas, and remember to organize everything in such a way that it will be easy for you to come back and find important information without spending hours searching.
It is a good idea to create a new folder on your computer that is appropriate for your business. Create a folder ‘ideas’ and a folder ‘plans’ and then start creating new text documents in these folders. Fill the text documents with all the ideas that come to mind, as well as all the important notes and information you want to remember about your plan.
Once you’ve put together a great plan, you’ll start executing the plan piece by piece and you’ll see how everything starts to fall into place when you have a good plan to work out.
Tip #4: Stay with a routine
A routine is a very important part of your home-based career, and it can help you achieve more success and make more money.
Start by keeping a notepad with you at all times and taking note of everything you do that is related to your home-based career. You can even go as far as noting all of your daily activities. Do this for about a week to help you get an idea of how long certain tasks take, and to help you determine where to save time and where to add more time.
Once you have a rough overview of your activities for about a week, start making a schedule for yourself. Use your notes to help you set up a schedule – see how much time certain tasks take and determine which tasks you save time on and which tasks you delegate more time to.
Make sure you have some break times for yourself as this can help your brain relax a little at certain times. It is important to give your brain some rest during your working hours in order to renew your brain. This can also help you come up with new ideas while having a lunch break as your brain will not be occupied by any specific tasks.
Tip #5: Stay motivated and don’t give up
One of the most common causes for failing home-based companies is giving up. You start your own career in-house, you work on it for about a week or two, don’t see results and then you lose hope and give up.
The truth is that there are many individuals who are successful today but started working from home and saw no real progress for up to 6 months, sometimes even for a longer period – the difference between these and the individuals who fail is the fact that these individuals don’t give up. They kept themselves motivated, and they worked on their home-based careers, although they didn’t see any results at first.
So the golden rule is never to give up. If you’re not sure what to do now, or how to reach a certain goal for your career at home, join a number of forums, read some blog posts, do a quick search on Google – there are thousands of people who can help you and answer your questions.

Visit a few pages and read the success stories of other home based entrepreneurs and employees – you’ll soon begin to realize that most of these individuals were in exactly the same position you’re in, and you’ll gain some insight and thoughts about what to do, and how to stay motivated.
